Schuman Residence

Jupiter Island

Planning for this project began with empty nesters looking to create a legacy retreat on the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean that could grow with them and their future generations. The clients engaged our office in a desire to plant roots and find refuge from the demanding pace of their everyday lives.

The result is a residence that has served as a place for play, a place for celebrations, and a place for joy, while still serving as a remote office for the family business.
A creative layout inside with an unassuming exterior builds the narrative of connection and sets the tone for this home fitted with durable and natural materials that will live and patina as the house ages, continuing to increase its beauty.

Process & Details

The style of the house was inspired by local Florida “cracker” vernacular, blended with the larger estate arts and crafts references of C.F. Voysey. The house was set back from the beach and angled specifically to capture the longest and most dynamic views of the ocean.
The guest house is uniquely situated at the highest elevation on the property. It’s south elevation is combined with site walls that define the inner courtyard, creating a dramatic view of its bay window from the main house.
The material palette includes white oak floors, wax plastered walls and eastern European limestone. Lime cypress was applied to the ceilings, walls, and cabinetry in multiple levels of living.
Natural, earty materials were chosen specifically for their durability and aesthetics. The wabi-sabi concept of beauty found in imperfection was applied to each selection to allow the home to age gracefully with time and use.
